What Is the History of Bridgeport, West Virginia?
Bridgeport’s history dates back to around 1764. Famed trapper and pioneer John Simpson was the first to enter the area. More people moved into the area in the coming years, especially after Simpson Creek Baptist Church was established. The church was among the first west of the Allegheny Mountains. The town’s name change occurred some time before chartering. Historians believe that citizens called the area “Bridge Fort,” after a bridge crossing Simpson Creek and accompanying forts in the area. However, mapmakers mistakenly called it Bridgeport, which led to the adoption of its modern moniker. Bridgeport became an incorporated city in 1887, and the turn of the 20th century brought growth as manufacturers like the West Virginia Pottery Company moved into the area. Today, Bridgeport is home to just under 10,000 people.
